The shoes are in my possession! Thank you to SophieKim. I LOVE LOVE LOVE them. They fit perfectly and are quite comfy (for being 4-inch platforms). Thanks also to Tonya and Mark who got them to me...eventually. :)

Happy belated birthday, Shannon! I wish I could've been there to help you celebrate. I really miss you guys.
This is why it's dangerous for me to read books: Last night I started a book around 11:30, with the intent of reading for a few hours. I COULD NOT STOP. I finished it at 3:15, and then tossed and turned for another hour because I couldn't stop thinking about it.
Tiredness didn't hit me until 3 p.m., though, so that's not too bad.

Brother Brother next Friday. The best part? It's NOT AT THE NOTE! Wise Fools. Be there or be square.
Joey: are you still planning on being at The Note all night tomorrow? Are you happy to have your stuff back?

It's official:
I work for the COOLEST COMPANY IN THE WORLD. Right now, they are having a full-blown 70's theme party upstairs. Decorations, music, costumes, food, the works. There is more alcohol than you could believe (it's great having Jim Beam/Pucker/Heineken as clients), and everyone is drinking. I wasn't planning on having any alcohol, but they made me do two shots before I escaped to check my e-mail.
I'm headed back up - wish me luck on making it out of here halfway sober at 5:00.

What are your plans this weekend? If anyone wants to do touristy stuff (architecture boat tour, exhibits, museums, Cheesecake Factory) with me and my mom, you're welcome to join us. Also, we will probably hit the piano bar one or both of the nights, and definitely will be boat-watching on Saturday (Venetian Night). Any takers??

So last night I leave my apartment to get some junk food. I HAD to have something salty or I was going to die. I get on the elevator looking like total crap - I hadn't showered, I was wearing my pajamas, and I had zero makeup on. The convenience store is IN the building, so I wasn't too worried about who I would see. UNTIL.
Until this cute guy walks into the store behind me (he was on a different elevator). He was very tall - maybe 6'6" (be still my heart!). We stood in front of the potato chip section together, and then we both ended up at the other chip section. We made small talk. He was in front of me in line, and I noticed out of the corner of my eye that he was waiting for me while I paid. We walked to the elevators together, him holding every door for me. Had a nice but short chat on the ride up, with plenty of flirting.
Why oh why did I have to look so bad? I mean, he still talked and flirted with me, which is cool, but still. I'll probably never see him again anyway - the building is weird like that. I guess I could put up a sign on the bulletin board: "Tall, cute guy with penchant for Chee-tos - call me! Signed, Doritos Girl."

Can anyone with knowledge of Illinois's state tax system tell me if having 2.8% withheld from my paychecks is going to be enough? That seems REALLY low (or at least it's low compared to Iowa).

Everything I own is HERE! In one place! The guys that brought me my things deserve sainthood. They loaded up everything out of my storage unit, drove it to Chicago, and carried it all in (and tried to arrange the furniture, but I insisted I could do it myself). All for $200. It took three months, but I finally have a complete home here. There's been a dividing line between my Chicago stuff (bed, computer, small TV, clothes) and my Iowa stuff (furniture, dishes, big TV). Seeing it all together gave me pause, but in a good way.
I spent most of the weekend putting stuff away/arranging/etc. I also watched tons of movies - having my big TV and comfy couch made me instantly want to catch up on all the DVDs I have. I didn't even WANT to go out, which is not like me at all.
Saw Cinema Paradiso last night with Joey. Good movie, but I can see why the original was cut the way it was. Too long, too many distracting storylines in the new version.
I can't believe I leave for vacation in two days. Time is flying!

Last night was completely unplanned, but ended up being a lot of fun. A few of us hit a piano bar. At first we were basically the only ones there (and were singled out by the piano players), but by the end of the night, the place was full. I got spotlighted a few times for knowing all the words to the songs. It's a great place to go if you just want to cut loose and sing at the top of your lungs. Watching the crowd have so much fun is a riot too.
Believe it or not, I'm actually getting ALL MY STUFF tonight. Not just a carload, but all of it. I'm nervous about the timing of the arrival vs. usage of the freight elevator (why does the condo board have to be such dicks about it?), but hopefully it will all work out. The thing I'm looking forward to the most is watching movies on my big TV while sitting on my COUCH. Not my bed, not the floor, but my couch. I've lived for three months with my bed being my only furniture, and I'm sick of it. I'm also sick of hearing me talk about my stuff. Let this be the end!
Flying home Wednesday, for five days of unlimited sun, good food, lots of beer, and excellent company. Got paid yesterday, and discovered the check was $300 more than I expected, and they even forgot to add the overtime. I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel for money woes. Life is good.

I forgot to add this:
Another perk here is that we can buy movie tickets for any Loews and General Cinema theater for $5 (or maybe it's $5.50, I'm not sure). Any of you Chicago-area movie lovers that want these cheaper tickets, let me know!

Working for this company keeps getting better and better.
Today was an expensive two-hour lunch with my manager (on the company, of course). When I got back, there was a memo waiting from the CEO. As an agency, we placed #2 in an industry poll, so he is giving us the 5th of July off (as well as the 4th). This now means that I won't be in the hole for vacation! I love this place!
One more week until I fly home. I can't believe how fast time is going...

Congratulations Brian! I knew you'd kick ass. I can't wait for the celebration party you'll be throwing when you get the job.

Just when I thought my day couldn't possibly get any better...
I just got offered this job! I've been temping here for four weeks, and I absolutely love it. The offer kept getting delayed because the main guy I work for is NEVER here. They finally decided to give me an offer anyway because everyone else likes me a lot. I'm getting the money I want, a shitload of vacation (I swear, they rarely work a full week), and great benefits.
I hereby transfer my good job karma to: Jen, Brian, Shay, Tonya and anyone else who needs it.
If anyone thinks I'm not going to party like there's no tomorrow, they are seriously mistaken!

I had a great birthday! Thanks to all of you for your well wishes.
We saw a band last night. Two, actually, but the first one was so horrible I've blocked them from my mind. Joey will be able to describe them better than I can. The Ghettobillies were a lot of fun - high energy, lots of excitement. I think we'll be hitting more of their shows in the future, especially since we met them after the show. The bass player is sexy, if you can get past the 8 or 9 pink devil horns on his head and the big lip ring.
Tonight is the party at the Wild Goose, which will be a blast. The weather is perfect and my friend is on her way. It's gonna be a good weekend.

Vince and Shannon: You guys rock. Thank you so much! You really brightened my day.
This weekend is going to be so great. One of my closest friends is coming tomorrow, and she's bringing me STUFF! I'm going to get dishes, silverware, a frying pan, a toaster, a shower curtain, rugs, glasses, blankets, framed prints... and anything else my sister threw in. I've lived for a long time without these things, and I've been fine, but it's going to be really nice to start to furnish my apartment.
THEN there's the birthday party tomorrow night! It's gonna be great. I wish you all could come.

I had a fantastic weekend! My sister and the other three girls had a blast. I think they all want to move to Chicago now.
We drank, danced, shopped, went sightseeing, saw a band, more dancing and drinking, eating, etc. I took them to a big Irish bar in my neighborhood Friday night, not realizing that Ireland was playing in the World Cup. It was so packed, and every single person there seemed to be from Dublin. We made tons of Irish friends.
The strangest thing happened on Saturday: I have sliding glass doors going out to the balcony. We were all laying around relaxing after shopping all day, and all of a sudden, there was a loud POP and the non-door side of the window completely cracked. It was just like watching a windshield crack - it spiderwebbed until the whole thing was shattered (but still intact). We were freaking out, not knowing if it would fall. There are two panes of glass, and it was the outside one, so it's not like we would get glass inside, but still. I didn't want it to fly off the edge of the balcony.
I instantly called the owner of the unit, but she wasn't home. I went down to the doorman to have him page the maintenance guy, but the maint. guy was already there. He came up to look at it (and in the meantime, the girls decided to get into my bed. You should've seen this guy do a triple-take when he saw four girls in one bed!). He was positive that the glass wasn't going to fall. The engineer is coming today to check it out and figure out what to do. It was soooo weird.

My sister is coming tomorrow to visit. Finally! I've been here for two months and she hasn't been here yet. I am so excited - she's bringing three of our mutual girlfriends. Five girls hitting the town the town this weekend. I'm not sure if Chicago can handle it.
I'm feeling guilty because my place is so unfurnished. Not only will everyone have to sleep on the floor, I only have a few pillows/blankets/towels. Of course, I've got a shitload of that stuff in storage, but they don't do much good when they're 350 miles away. Luckily they all understand and don't care. I would have my sister bring some of my stuff, but it's going to be a tight fit anyway with 4 girls and all their stuff.
Work is BORING today. I'm ok with that every now and then... but damn, making myself look busy and/or checking e-mail every two minutes is exhausting.
Dinner with Jen tonight, followed by the last performance (for the summer) of Sonic Voodoo. Should be a great night, and an even better weekend.

So I've been telling people how I'm going to skydive for my 30th birthday (one year and one week away). I've always wanted to do it, and my 30th seems like a good milestone.
Valerie said she wants to do it with me. Last night on the phone, we started planning it... and it turned into creating The Perfect Day. This is what we're going to do, and any of y'all are welcome to join us:
Start the day off with manicures & pedicures. Drive out to the skydiving place and do our dives. Come back to the city and get ready (the if-one-of-us-wins-the-lottery-before-this plan includes cute new clothes and a limo shuttling us from one place to the next). Dinner at a fancy steakhouse, with dessert at the Cheesecake Factory. Painting the town red to immediately follow.
We figured we could do it for $350-400. We're both going to start saving our money (I have secret hopes that we could both swing it at the end of summer instead of waiting a whole year). It's not a huge amount of money, but it IS a lot to drop in one day on completely non-essential stuff.
It would also make it even more fun if we had a bunch of people!

2:01 pm - Four reviews just aren't enough!
|
I owe it to the Voo to add my praise and adulation. These guys are so great! I want everyone I know to hear them and love them as much as I do. If Joey can trim those tracks, I'll begin the assault on my family and friends. They won't even know what hit them.
About 1% of me is relieved that they won't be playing Thursday nights anymore, because getting up for work is a BITCH. But, it's only 1% of me that feels this way.
Thanks again to Jen for feeding us last night. We really need to set a fixed date for dinners and/or get-togethers during the week. I'll even (grudgingly) cook for everyone once I get all my kitchen stuff.
